GFCI vs AFCI outlets
Those outlets with the TEST and RESET buttons aren't a different type of outlet — they're protection devices built into the outlet. There are two kinds. They protect against different hazards and are required in different locations.
GFCI — Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
What it protects against: Electrocution.
A GFCI monitors the current flowing out on the hot wire and coming back on the neutral. In a normal circuit, these are equal. If current finds another path — say, through your body to the ground — the balance breaks. The GFCI detects the difference (as small as 4–6 milliamps) and cuts power in 1/40th of a second. That's fast enough to prevent death. A regular breaker is not.
Where they're required by code (NEC):
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens (within 6 feet of a sink)
- Garages
- Outdoors
- Crawl spaces
- Unfinished basements
- Near swimming pools, hot tubs, boat docks
The logic: anywhere water and electricity might meet.
How to test: Press TEST — power should cut. Press RESET — power returns. Do this monthly. If it won't reset or keeps tripping, the GFCI is failing and needs replacement. They're $15–25.
One GFCI can protect a whole circuit. If you wire a GFCI outlet correctly using the LOAD terminals, every outlet downstream on that circuit gets GFCI protection. This is why not every outlet in a bathroom has TEST/RESET buttons.
AFCI — Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
What it protects against: Electrical fires.
Arc faults happen when current jumps between two conductors through air or a damaged insulator — like through a pinched wire under a rug, a staple driven through a cable, or insulation that's cracked with age. The arc generates enormous heat and can ignite surrounding material long before enough current flows to trip a regular breaker.
AFCIs detect the signature waveform of an arc fault and trip before it starts a fire.
Where they're required:
- Bedrooms (since 1999 NEC)
- All living spaces in most recent NEC editions (living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, etc.)
- The 2023 NEC extends this to nearly all areas of the home
AFCI protection typically lives in the breaker panel — AFCI breakers replace standard breakers and protect the whole circuit. Combination AFCI/GFCI outlets also exist for specific applications.
Can they be in the same location?
Yes. Combination AFCI+GFCI devices exist and are required in some locations under newer code. Kitchen and bathroom circuits near sinks need GFCI; bedrooms and living spaces need AFCI. Where those overlap, you need both.
If you're buying a house
Test every GFCI in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages. If there are none — or if they fail the test — the electrical is out of code and you have grounds to negotiate repair costs. Older homes may have no GFCI protection at all.
An electrician can add GFCI protection to existing circuits relatively cheaply. AFCI upgrades are more involved since they typically require breaker replacement at the panel.
