How to replace an outlet
A dead outlet, a loose outlet that sparks, a two-prong outlet you want to upgrade to three — all the same job. A replacement outlet costs $1–5. An electrician charges $75–150 to swap one. The skill level required is: following steps carefully.
What you need
- Replacement outlet (match the amperage: 15A for most rooms, 20A has a T-slot on one prong hole)
- Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
- Non-contact voltage tester ($15 — this is non-negotiable)
- Needle-nose pliers
Step 1: Cut power and verify it's dead
Flip the breaker for that circuit. Then plug something into the outlet — a lamp, a phone charger, anything. Confirm it's off.
Then use the voltage tester on the outlet slots before you touch anything. The tester beeps or lights up if power is present. If it beeps after you flipped the breaker, you have the wrong breaker. Find the right one.
Don't skip the tester. Breakers can be mislabeled. Circuits can be wired in unexpected ways.
Step 2: Remove the old outlet
Unscrew the cover plate. Set it aside — you'll reuse it unless it's damaged.
Unscrew the two screws holding the outlet to the electrical box (top and bottom). Pull the outlet straight out carefully. The wires are short and there's not much slack.
Now test again with the voltage tester on the terminals of the old outlet before you touch any wires. Confirm dead.
Step 3: Photograph the wiring before disconnecting
Take a clear photo of which wires connect where before you touch anything. This is your reference if you get confused during reassembly.
Standard wiring for a simple outlet:
- Black (hot) → brass-colored screws (on the right side of the outlet when facing it)
- White (neutral) → silver-colored screws (left side)
- Bare copper or green (ground) → green screw (bottom)
Some outlets are backstabbed — the wires are pushed into holes in the back instead of wrapped around screws. Backstabbing is a known failure mode. If your old outlet was backstabbed, switch to screw terminals on the replacement.
Step 4: Disconnect and reconnect
Loosen the terminal screws and unwrap the wires, or pull the backstabbed wires free (use a flathead in the release slot).
Connect to the new outlet:
- Black → brass screw. Wrap clockwise so tightening the screw pulls the wire in, not out.
- White → silver screw. Same technique.
- Ground → green screw.
Tighten firmly. Give each wire a gentle tug to confirm it's secure. A loose connection is a fire hazard and a future mystery problem.
Step 5: Fold and reinstall
Gently fold the wires back into the box, accordion-style. Don't force them — if they're tight, work carefully rather than yanking. Screw the outlet into the box (check that it's level), reinstall the cover plate, and restore the breaker.
Test with the voltage tester and then plug something in.
Upgrading from 2-prong to 3-prong
If there's no ground wire in the box, you have two legal options:
- Install a GFCI outlet and label it "No Equipment Ground" — the NEC allows this. GFCI protection substitutes for a ground in terms of shock protection.
- Run a ground wire back to the panel — the proper fix, more involved.
Do not connect the ground terminal to the neutral. Do not add a fake ground wire that goes nowhere. Both are dangerous and fail-code.
What this doesn't cover
- 240V outlets (dryers, ranges, EV chargers) — different job, higher stakes
- Outlets that keep tripping GFCI — investigate the cause, don't just replace
- Any outlet in a wet location — needs GFCI regardless, and may need a weatherproof cover
