The penny test for tire tread is outdated — here's the better one
The penny test has been repeated for decades: stick a penny into your tire tread, Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is worn out. It's not wrong — it's just late.
What the penny test actually measures
Inserting a penny with Lincoln's head down and seeing the top of his head means your tread has worn down to about 2/32 of an inch — which is the legal minimum tread depth in most states. That's the point tires are considered legally worn out and unsafe, not the point to start paying attention.
The quarter test catches it earlier
Use a quarter instead, with Washington's head down. If you can see the top of his head, you're at about 4/32 of an inch — the point where most tire experts and manufacturers recommend you start actively shopping for replacements, especially before wet or winter driving season. Wet-weather stopping distance and hydroplaning resistance both drop noticeably between 4/32" and 2/32", well before tires are "legally" bald.
The built-in indicator that doesn't require a coin at all
Every modern tire has wear bars molded into the tread grooves — small raised rubber bridges running perpendicular to the tread pattern. When the surrounding tread wears down to be flush with these bars, the tire is at the 2/32" legal limit. Look for small triangle markers on the tire's sidewall (▲) — they point to where the wear bars are located in the tread.
Why tread depth matters more than people think
- Wet traction drops sharply as tread shallows, since there's less channel depth to move water out from under the tire — this is the main mechanism behind hydroplaning
- Snow and ice traction depends heavily on tread depth and pattern; worn tires lose most of their winter capability well before summer capability
- Stopping distance on a worn tire can be dramatically longer in wet conditions than on a tire with healthy tread, even if the tire looks "fine" walking past it
Check more than one spot
Tires wear unevenly. Check tread depth at the outer edge, center, and inner edge of each tire — uneven wear patterns (more worn on one edge) are also a sign of alignment or inflation problems worth getting checked, separate from overall tread depth.
